An eye-opening short story on selfishness that transforms a man’s heart through unexpected events, lesson on compassion and the value of selflessness.

 1. The Selfish Farmer

In a peaceful village near Thirunelveli lived a farmer named Muthu. Though he was wealthy and owned vast paddy fields, Muthu was known for his extreme selfishness. He never shared water from his well during dry seasons, nor gave a handful of rice to beggars. His neighbours respected him for his success but pitied his closed heart.

2. A Stormy Night and a Stranger’s Plea

One stormy night, an old woman with a frail voice knocked on his door. She was drenched and hungry. "Can I rest here for the night and have something to eat?" she pleaded. Muthu, irritated, shouted, "Go away! I don’t feed strangers." With tears, she walked away into the dark, thunder-filled night.

The next morning, news spread that an old woman had died near the village pond due to the cold. Muthu felt a strange discomfort, but brushed it off and went about his day.

3. The Sudden Fall

Within a week, Muthu’s crops began to fail despite good weather. His cattle fell sick. His workers left one by one. Confused and helpless, he sought the village elder. The elder listened quietly and said, “Sometimes nature reflects our hearts. A dried-up heart invites drought, even in rain.”

The words struck Muthu like lightning. He remembered the old woman’s face, her trembling voice. Guilt weighed him down.

4. Transformation and Redemption

From that day, Muthu changed. He began to share food during festivals, opened his well during summer, and even started feeding stray animals. His lands flourished again, rains were kinder, and people smiled at him not with fear but with affection.

Children now played near his house, and the once lonely man found joy in giving. His name slowly turned into one of respect, not just for his wealth—but for his kindness.

Conclusion

Selfishness may bring comfort, but never peace. Muthu’s story from the heart of Tamil Nadu reminds us that the true wealth of a person lies in their ability to care, to give, and to transform. When hearts open, blessings follow.
